The first decision on any water-damage carpet call isn't how to clean it — it's how contaminated the water is, because that determines everything downstream. Clean water from a supply-line break or an overflow from a clean source is the most salvageable category: carpet and sometimes even the pad can often be dried and saved if extraction starts quickly. Water that's been sitting, come from a roof or exterior source, or backed up from a drain or sewage line is treated as contaminated (grey or black water) and carries a health risk that generally rules out attempting to save the carpet pad — sometimes the carpet itself — regardless of how quickly we respond, because contaminated water introduces bacteria and organic material into porous material that clean-water extraction and drying can't fully resolve.
Time matters almost as much as water category. Mold and mildew can begin developing in wet carpet, pad, and the subfloor beneath it within roughly 24 to 48 hours, depending on temperature and humidity — that window is why we treat this as an emergency service rather than a scheduled one, and why speed of response is often the single biggest factor in whether carpet is saveable at all. Carpet that's been wet for hours responds to extraction and structural drying far better than carpet that sat wet overnight or longer, which has usually already lost the race against mold regardless of how good the drying equipment is once it finally arrives.
The carpet pad is almost always the first casualty. Pad is far more absorbent than carpet fiber and dries much more slowly, and even clean-water pad that technically could be dried often isn't worth the drying time and mold risk versus simply replacing it — pad is comparatively inexpensive next to the carpet itself, so replacing it is usually the practical, honest recommendation rather than an attempt to save every layer. We use moisture meters to check actual moisture levels in carpet, pad, and subfloor rather than guessing by feel, because a carpet that looks dry on the surface can still be wet enough underneath to develop mold if it's not properly dried through.
